Can you automate an existing gate? A retrofit checklist

You usually don't need a new gate. Here's how to tell whether the gate you already have can be automated, what has to be fixed first, and what it costs to retrofit in Kerala.

A lot of people assume automating a gate means buying a new gate. It usually doesn't. Automation is hardware that drives the gate you already have, and most sound gates in Kerala are candidates.

The honest qualifier is that "sound" does real work in that sentence. Here's how to check yours.

The five-minute test you can do yourself

Go to your gate and do this before anyone quotes you:

1. Push it by hand, slowly, through its whole travel. It should move with steady, even effort from fully closed to fully open. What you're feeling for is change — a point where it gets heavier, catches, or wants to run away from you.

2. Watch where it sits at every point. A sliding gate should stay square to the track. A swing leaf shouldn't dip as it opens.

3. Grab the leading edge and shake it. A frame that twists noticeably is a problem. The motor pushes from one point, and a flexible frame absorbs that push instead of transmitting it into movement.

4. Look at the track or the hinges. Sliding: is the track straight, level, and clear of silt? Roller-wheel channel free of debris? Swing: are the hinges tight and greased, and have the posts stayed plumb?

5. Check what's near the gate. Is there a power point within a sensible cable run? Is there room alongside for a sliding gate to park, or clear arc for a swing leaf?

If the gate moves freely and evenly, doesn't twist, and runs on a sound track or sound hinges, it's very likely automatable as it stands.

What has to be fixed first

The honest list, and the order we usually find it:

  • Silted or bent sliding track. Clearing is routine; re-laying a bent or unlevel track is real work, and must happen before automation. A motor forced to drive a gate along a bad track will trip its force limit, or wear out.
  • Seized, worn or dry hinges on a swing gate. Same logic. The gate has to swing freely by hand first.
  • Posts that have moved. A post out of plumb changes the geometry of the whole opening. This is civil work.
  • A frame that flexes. Often fixable with bracing, which is cheaper than a new gate and makes the automation behave.
  • No power nearby. Cable run and conduit or trenching — frequently the most underestimated item in a retrofit quote.

Note what isn't on that list: the gate's age, its material, or whether it's "automation ready". None of those matter much. Free movement and a stiff frame matter a lot.

What it costs

The automation starts from the same place as a new build. All prices include GST and cover the motor kit:

Gate typeMotorFrom
Sliding gateStandard (AC)₹34,000
Sliding gatePremium (DC)₹39,500
Swing gate — single armDC₹40,000
Swing gate — double armDC₹44,000
Roller gate (wheel-drive swing)DC₹46,000

The saving in a retrofit isn't a discount on the automation — it's that you're not buying a gate. Remedial work, if the survey finds any, is quoted separately and transparently, so you can decide whether to do it.

And the same standard fit applies as on any new installation:

  • Safety sensors (photocells)
  • Battery backup
  • 2 remote controls (RFID tags available as an add-on)
  • A free site survey first

Retrofitting is not a reason to skip the safety items. An automated gate that a person can walk into needs photocells whether the gate is new or twenty years old.

When a retrofit doesn't pay

There's one scenario where we'll tell you to replace rather than retrofit: when the gate is already at the end of its life. If the frame is corroded through, the posts need rebuilding and the track needs re-laying, the remedial bill approaches the cost of a new gate — and you'd be spending it to keep something that will need replacing soon anyway.

Near the coast, in Alappuzha and the backwater belt, this comes up more often. Salt air works on frames and fixings, and a gate that looks acceptable from six feet away can be much worse at the welds.

This is a judgement call, and it's one we'd rather make at the survey than halfway through an installation.

Adding voice control

While we're at the gate, one thing worth knowing: voice control is a WiFi smart-switch module added to the control side. It works with most standard gate motors that have a remote-control input, which includes most retrofits, and it's brand-agnostic — it doesn't tie you to a particular motor.

It's a convenience, not a safety feature, and it sits alongside the remotes rather than replacing them. It needs a DC motor — AC motors have no remote-control input to wire it into.

What the survey actually checks

So you know what to expect when we visit:

  1. Gate movement through full travel, by hand.
  2. Frame rigidity and the fixing points the motor will use.
  3. Track condition and level, or hinge and post condition.
  4. Gate weight and width, which set the motor specification.
  5. Power availability and the cable route.
  6. Where photocells can be mounted so they actually cover the opening.
  7. How often the gate will be used — a shared or commercial gate needs a motor rated for the duty cycle.

That last point is worth flagging for apartment and commercial retrofits: a gate that's been opened by hand a few times a day may be about to start opening two hundred times a day. The gate is the same; the specification isn't. Our price guide goes into what else moves the number.

The bottom line

If your gate moves freely by hand, doesn't twist when you shake it, and sits on a sound track or sound hinges, it can almost certainly be automated — and that's the cheaper path by a wide margin. If it binds, sags or flexes, that gets fixed first, and the survey will tell you honestly whether that's worth doing or whether the gate has had its run.

See our automatic gate installation service, or WhatsApp us a photo of your gate, its track or hinges, and roughly its width — that's usually enough for us to say whether it's a straightforward retrofit before we come out. We cover Kottayam, Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha.
